HOUSE FOR A GARDENER
Co. Carlow

Set amongst arable and grazing land with views South and East towards the Blackstairs Mountains. The new house is organised around three existing features: a row of mature trees along its east boundary, a ruined cottage and an ancient apple tree. The spaces between the house and these features create opportunities for a variety of new gardens
GATE LODGE - RATHFARNHAM
Co.Dublin 'Best House Extension' - 2015 Irish Architecture Awards

Conservation and sustainable design underpin the new lease of life for this gate lodge in the curtilage of a protected structure.

The existing building was tiny, neglected and uninhabitable.
The new addition provides an accessible covered entrance to the East, a spine of bedrooms with south and east light and a living room/kitchen with south-east and west light.
The garden is enclosed with a new granite wall (estate boundary re-made from stone excavated on site) and the new timber rooms are sheltered behind a concrete wall and set into the ground facing south up the slope.
The new structure, cladding and joinery is built with Himalayan cedar cut from the trees on the avenue which had outlived their span. The new roof is of corrugated weathering steel. Rainwater is gathered on site and foul is treated in a reed bed.

HOUSE FOR MUSICIANS - BUILDING ON A SOUND
Carrickfin, Co.Donegal

This is a house for music built on a sound at the mouth of an estuary in the Rosses. The Rosses is a glacial landscape of roches moutonées and drowned estuaries.

The site is on a promontory overlooking the confluence of two estuaries or rias.
This promontory is at the end of an isthmus joining what was an island of granite back to the mainland. The sandy isthmus is the landing strip for Donegal airport.

The footprint of the building straddles a cleft facing south up one estuary and looking East along the Gweedore River to the quartzite cone of Errigal Mountain in the background.

These cardinal points organise the plan around a central kitchen embedded in a hollow in the site giving glimpses out to the surrounding topography while providing shelter from the elements.

A spine of bedrooms lines the house to the North with south facing clerestory entering the section. To the South a sitting room hunkers in the heath by the sea. The kitchen sits between these elements with views of Errigal to the East, the sea to the South. The evening sun enters through the walled and bermed west facing entrance court. The chimney anchors these elements in the landscape and incorporates light shafts and stairs within its girth.

The floor is a concrete raft floating in the sand and peat with a stepped section following the underlying rock. The walls are of heavy masonry with lime plaster from local sand. The bedrooms are roofed with slates given to the clients as a wedding present. The lower spaces are turfed over with sod from the site with steps giving access to the sitting room roof from the entrance court. This roof forms an elevation to the sky, maintains habitat and shelters the space below from the elements around. Roof timbers and joinery elements are of larch. The aggregates and sands in the concrete are local, sandblasted outside and polished inside. The floor is heated from a ground source heat pump.

The materials are disposed for acoustic effect and secondary spaces open off the kitchen to create a rich sound for session music. The sitting room is isolated and skewed for recording purposes.

The setting changes from sand to water and back again as the tide ebbs and flows.
LANEWAY WALL GARDEN HOUSE
Dublin

The project was to provide new kitchen, living and bedroom to this 19th century split level terraced Dublin house. This was achieved by stripping away previous extraneous extensions, recasting the boundary retaining wall to the rear laneway and reinstating familiar domestic forms of lean-to and covered yard accommodation arranged around a courtyard garden.

The walls provide direct support for two roof elements which define the courtyard. Their lower edges rest on and are connected by a timber box-beam doubling as valley gutter that collects all rainwater from the rear of the house and diverts it to a cast concrete cistern. Bricks from the enlarged opening in the back wall are used to pave the two connected yards.

The design aims to draw on the ‘borrowed landscape’ of domestic backlands with its network of returns, back yards, outhouses, garden walls and rights of way. The scale of garden wall and lean-to roof is used to connect and mediate between private house, urban courtyard garden and common back lane, using unadorned construction and a palette of carefully chosen materials.

The boundary wall of cast insitu boardmarked concrete encloses and defines the garden and back yard as well as presenting a new elevation to the semi-private world of narrow rear and side lanes. This presents an unadorned material to this ambiguous urban territory that is self-finished and robust, and at close contact traces a detailed memory of the sawn Douglas Fir boards used as formwork in its casting. This same grain is mirrored in roof structure, ceiling boards, kitchen cabinets, window seat and external joinery which are all in Douglas Fir. The richness of the untreated wood will eventually mute to become more like the light-coloured concrete and the zinc roof covering- the palette becoming more even with weathering. The concrete walls and the timber structure will not need painting (and therefore maintenance), but will take on the life of the lane and garden allowing lichens and moss to inhabit their textured surface.

Internally the boundary wall is lined with insulation and an internal masonry wall where it encompasses the kitchen and garden bedroom/study. An insulated, heated concrete screed is polished to create a reflective yet warm floor surface adjacent to the courtyard, stepping up to create a plinth on which kitchen cabinets sit. GGBS replaces 50% of cement in concrete throughout.

The span of the box beam with alternating roof planes draws together garden, house and lane with a new enclosing wall
